How to boost retention

Yael Adamson-Brown's Idea:

Find ways to demonstrate that the volunteering is making a difference. A common problem we came up against would be that volunteers gave up on their involvement because some of the people they were working with were long-term unemployed. This was something the volunteers found demoralising because they couldn't see progress over the 2-3 months that they were volunteering with us. So to solve this we began measuring the 'Employment Readiness' of young people. This was a scale that included improvements that young people could show progress along within just a few weeks, in some cases, even within a few days. It included things like ability to answer interview questions, ask proactive interview questions to the interviewer about the company, conduct research on a prospective company and how to research your interviewer on LinkedIn. By enabling volunteers to see the progress that young people were making along these lines, we were able to boost retention of volunteers and in fact increase the number of new volunteers that were recruited via word of mouth.
