Purpose: Balance data collection with crisis response
Content:
The Challenge: People arriving at emergency accommodation are often in acute crisis. They may be:
- Exhausted, cold, hungry
- In withdrawal or intoxicated
- Traumatized or distressed
- Suspicious of services
- Unable to focus on paperwork
Trauma-Informed Intake Principles:
- Safety First, Data Second
- Get them a bed, food and warmth FIRST
- Collect only essential information initially (name, age, immediate risks)
- Complete full intake within first 48 hours when they've stabilized
- Essential vs Nice-to-Have
- Essential NOW: Name, age, immediate health/safety risks, allergies, consent
- Can wait: Full background, detailed history, support planning
- Choice and Control
- Offer choices: "Would you prefer to complete this now or tomorrow?"
- Allow "prefer not to say" options liberally
- Accept partial information - you can add more later
- Plain Language
- Don't ask "What was your previous tenure arrangement?"
- DO ask "Where were you sleeping last night?"
Makerble Tips:
- Use the Contact Form for minimum essential info (5 minutes max)
- Add the Baseline Survey later (within first week)
- Enable "Quick Add Contact" for crisis situations
- Train staff on partial data entry - something is better than nothing
